Jason Chaffetz, a GOP Representative, is looking to fire federal employees who owe back taxes. He has proposed a bill that will not only terminate federal employees for being tax evaders, but will also keep “tax scofflaws” from being hired by the federal government in the first place.
Chaffetz emphasizes that the Federal citizen employees “draw their compensation and funds from the American taxpayers (so) they owe it to the taxpayers themselves to be compliant.”
According to data provided by the IRS, about 100,000 federal employees owed a total of nearly $1 billion in unpaid federal income taxes in 2009 alone.
The bill specifically targets those with tax liens and will exempt those who are on a plan to repay taxes or are military personnel.
The House voted on the bill Tuesday, July 31 and it passed by a vote of 263 to 114. It will now be sent to the Senate.
